IS THIS COURSE FOR ME? This is the introductory course in SFX Makeup you have all been waiting for. Every year we are asked to run entry level courses so those who are tempted to get into this side of make up get the chance to try it out. Stuart Bray is one of the best in the business and a great teacher, so in just 2 days you will be surprised by how much you will learn on quick and easy Out-of-the-Kit SFX tricks and techniques using a wide variety of materials...
Stuart says: As a prosthetic makeup artist, I often need to create appliances in advance to supply continuity and convenience when making multiple identical appliances. However, making appliances comes with a fair bit of preparation, so being able to make up things on the spot is handy when there isn't time, schedules change or the budget doesn't stretch to prep time. A few basic materials can be used to create a huge range of effects, from open wounds, burns, gunshot wounds, diseases, stitches and scarring. The purpose of this workshop is to take you through the process of constructing these effects with little or no advance prep time.
Some elements can be fabricated briefly in advance and applied to the skin, but in many cases, we will work directly onto the skin. Using reference and working through a logical sequence of steps is key to creating a successful illusion. Often, when starting out, distraction by the feel and behaviour of materials can hamper true creativity. By becoming familiar with the materials and approach in this workshop, you can troubleshoot your personal demons and develop your skills in a warm and welcoming environment. You can ask your questions, make mistakes and drill deep to overcome your stumbling blocks.
Over the two days we will create:
• Clean & messy open wounds.
• Burns & blast injuries.
• Multiple tissues such as muscle, fat and bone in a single injury.
• Stitches, sutures and staples - wound closure.
• Fabricating multiple wounds quickly.
Making up effects from the kit is a lively, exciting challenge and often leads to results which can surpass traditionally made appliance makeups. Even with appliances, some fabrication and out-of-the-kit enhancements can make something even better. I will share my philosophy and approach to making effective FX and tips and tricks to make things quickly and effectively.
